Student Shot in Drive-By Attack at RTD Bus Stop
A Westchester High School student was wounded in a gang-related drive-by shooting Monday morning as he waited for an RTD bus in front of the school.
The student, whose name is being withheld by police, was shot in the stomach just after 10:30 a.m. and taken to a Westside hospital, where he underwent surgery. Police declined to name the hospital but said the 16-year-old student was in stable condition Monday afternoon. The student had been attending summer school.
Harriette Williams, senior high schools division administrator for the Los Angeles Unified School District, said the incident was the first gang-related shooting at Westchester High. Police said there are no suspects. Witnesses told officers that the student’s two assailants, apparently members of a rival gang, drove up to the student in a brown Cadillac, shot him after a brief exchange, then sped off.
