La Puente : Street Renaming Rejected
The City Council on Tuesday rejected a proposal to rename Dial Street to remove its identification with a local gang.
The council had considered the change after seven residents of the street signed a letter requesting it. Only two proponents of the change testified during the meeting. The council, which voted 4 to 1 against the change, apparently was swayed by the testimony of three opponents, who said they feared gang reprisals if the name change was approved.
In turning down the request, council members also said they did not want to set a precedent for street name changes in the city.
Councilman Edward L. Chavez cast the dissenting vote.
