SPORTSCOPE : Prep All-Star Game Will Feature Several Westside Standouts

Eighty players will compete Saturday in the 15th annual Los Angeles Prep Senior Bowl All-Star Classic football game at Culver City High’s Helms Field. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

The South-West team, coached by Lou Lichtl of Culver City, includes several former prep standouts players from the Westside, including Westchester High receiver Albert Jones, Fairfax running back Mario Mattison and St. Monica quarterback Dion Bergeron.

Gene Zeller of Blair will coach the North-East team. Some of the top players on the squad are wide receiver Charles Carr of Blair, defensive backs Hassan McCullough and Thad Culpepper of Muir and Marshall lineman John Evans.

Ticket prices are $6 for adults, $4 for high school students and $2 for children.

The 40th annual California Shrine All-Star Football Classic, featuring top graduates from Northern and Southern California high schools, will be played on Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. with all proceeds benefiting the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Los Angeles Unit.

Kickoff time for the UCLA football game at Tennessee on Sept. 14 has been changed to 12:30 p.m. EDT, to accommodate WTBS, which will televise the game.

Jeff Speakman, star of the film “The Perfect Weapon,” will be among the martial arts experts demonstrating their skills at the Culver City Auditorium on Aug. 11, at 7 p.m.

Proceeds from the event go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and diabetes research.

Other celebrities expected to attend include David Alan Grier of the television show “In Living Color,” and Thomas Griffith of the film “Karate Kid III.”

The Santa Monica Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament will be Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Monica College Tennis Courts.

All proceeds will go to the Neurological Recovery Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

Between 50 and 60 of the top men and women wheelchair tennis players are expected to participate.

The Society of Experimental Dart Players hold weekly dart tournaments every Tuesday evening at the King’s Head British Pub and Restaurant at 116 Santa Monica Boulevard in Santa Monica.

UCLA forward Tracy Murray is among the 14 finalists to make the 12-man team that will represent the United States at the Pan American Games in Havana on Aug. 13-17.

Also among the 14 finalists is Stanford’s Adam Keefe.
