California IN BRIEF : BERKELEY : Arrest Sparks Melee at People’s Park

About 250 People’s Park activists surrounded a squad car when police arrested a parole violator during groundbreaking for hotly protested volleyball courts at the park, police said. The groundbreaking drew about 300 activists opposed to the University of California’s plans to convert the park frequented by the homeless into a recreation area.
