Several thousand gallons of raw sewage poured into the Pacific at La Jolla Shores Beach Monday night, health officials said Tuesday.

The spill of an estimated 6,300 gallons of sewage flowed into the ocean for 3 1/2 hours beginning at 7 p.m. Roots of a tree apparently blocked a sewer line causing sewage to pour into a manhole overflow pipe in the 2000 block of Spindrift Drive. The sewage then entered a nearby storm drain that empties into the ocean.

Signs warning of the contaminated waters were posted along the beach for 150 feet on each side of the storm drain. The signs will remain in place for 48 hours.
