Suspect in Shooting Rampage Pleads Not Guilty
NEWPORT BEACH — Michael E. Rahming, who is accused of murder and attempted murder in a shooting rampage July 30 at Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa pleaded not guilty to all charges Friday.
Rahming appeared in Harbor Municipal Court for his arraignment. After the brief session, he was returned to Orange County Jail, as he was unable to post $500,000 bail.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Randy Pawloski said Rahming will be back in court Oct. 25 for a preliminary hearing. If convicted of all the charges against him, Rahming could be sentenced to 99 years in state prison, Pawloski said.
Rahming, 38, a painter who lives in Long Beach, was arrested at his home July 30 shortly after the shootings. He is accused of killing a supervisor at Fairview, wounding two other employees there, and trying to shoot a fourth.
According to supervisors and state officials, Rahming had a history of run-ins with supervisors at Fairview because of his complaints of racism.
