SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : Toreras Defeat Nevada Reno

The University of San Diego women’s volleyball team opened its 1991 season by defeating host Nevada Friday night in the Nevada Tournament in Reno. The Toreras (1-0) came up with the 15-5, 17-15, 6-15, 15-8 victory despite being outkilled by Nevada, 64-40.

At the Arizona State Invitational, San Diego State lost its first two matches, against Pepperdine and ASU. Both of those teams were 2-0 in the first day of the tournament.

The Aztecs stretched Pepperdine but ended up on the short end of a 15-5, 15-7, 5-15, 9-15, 15-13 loss. ASU defeated SDSU in straight games, 15-5, 15-9, 15-10. The Aztecs were hurt by the loss of starting setter Pam Hope, who was injured in the second match.

Elsewhere, Utah State is 1-1 and Hofstra and SDSU are 0-2. The tournament continues today.

Point Loma Nazarene swept its first two pool-play matches in the opening day of the Christ College Invitational at Christ College in Irvine.

The Crusaders snatched a 15-7, 11-15, 15-12 victory from Cal State San Bernardino, then defeated Cal State Hayward, 15-3, 15-7. Robin Rabello compiled 11 kills and four aces against San Bernardino.

SDSU’s men’s team opened its season with a 3-1 victory against Cal State San Bernardino. Brian Craft-Negrete opened scoring for the Aztecs (1-0) and teammate Bill Demke kicked the final two goals.
