Lantos Is Right About Japanese Job Prejudice
I was pleased to read of Tom Lantos’ efforts to start investigations into unfair hiring and employment practices by Japanese firms operating in the United States.
It must be made clear that such an investigation is not “Japan bashing,” as many assert.
The Japanese themselves will admit that they are ignorant of and baffled by American employment and labor practices, as is evident from the increasing number of discrimination suits brought against their firms.
This is part of a larger problem: a Japanese lack of understanding of a heterogeneous society and a Japanese proclivity toward racism and xenophobia.
