OUTLOOK
Barnett feels good about his team, but not about his schedule. The Mustangs open the season Sept. 13 against South County power El Toro at the Mustangs’ new stadium. Nonleague games against Corona del Mar, Villa Park and Woodbridge follow. “After that schedule, we’ll be happy just to get to league,” he said. Barnett’s top returnees are Barnes, who gained 874 yards as a part-time starter; Clayton, a first-team all-league pick, and Pugh a second-team all-leaguer. “Barnes is going to be a lot better than he was last year,” Barnett said. “But I’m cautiously optimistic about my team. We have a lot of question marks with kids who don’t have much experience.” Barnett said Pugh and Clayton are college prospects. “Clayton ended up as a better back than (Ben) Rooker last season,” Barnett said. “Jeff has a great attitude and is a good multi-purpose back.” Teno returns as one of the top kickers in the county.
