PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Nick Bell’s Hamstring Healing Quickly
Rookie tailback Nick Bell is recovering quickly from his pulled right hamstring and could be activated after four games.
Bell, who is on injured reserve, is eligible to return for the Sept. 29 game against the San Francisco 49ers at the Coliseum.
“He’s doing well,” Raider Coach Art Shell said. “He’s been running routes and running sweeps. We expect him to be ready to go in a couple of weeks.”
Jay Schroeder’s 45-21 record as a starting quarterback ranks third among active NFL players behind Joe Montana (100-39) and Jim McMahon (50-23). . . . The Raider defense allowed only 13 points Sunday but managed to move up only three places in overall defense, from 26th to 23rd in the league.
The Indianapolis Colts, the Raiders’ opponents Sunday at the Coliseum, have lost their first two games of the season for the seventh consecutive season. Any particular reason?
“Yeah,” Coach Ron Meyer said in Wednesday’s conference call, “we’re just not worth a damn.”
Colt tailback Eric Dickerson, whose career has been marred by off-the-field holdouts and other controversial activities, hopes the rest of his headlines are positive ones. “I’m not a guy that likes to make trouble, but sometimes it just happens, things don’t go the way that I plan them to go or the team plans,” he said. “I think most of my things came with holdouts. That’s the past, and you get tired of answering questions from the past.”
