Canizales Will Defend Title in Indio Today
INDIO — A bantamweight championship fight that has bounced around San Remo, Italy; El Paso and Laredo, Tex., finally lands in Indio this afternoon.
Orlando Canizales (28-1-1) of Laredo will defend his International Boxing Federation title against Fernie Morales (28-4-0) of El Paso at the Desert ExpoCentre.
The fight, originally scheduled for Italy, seemed headed for Texas when an Italian promoter unexpectedly bailed out. But Canizales’ manager, Bob Spagnola, didn’t want the fight to be held in Morales’ hometown, El Paso. And the venue in Laredo was booked for today, the only date it could be broadcast live internationally--except in the United States.
The card will begin at 12:15 p.m.
