Georgians Seize TV Center
TBILISI, Soviet Union — Armed opponents of Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia seized the television headquarters in the capital of Tbilisi late Saturday and clashed with police this morning, witnesses said.
“There is shooting in the center of Tbilisi, and we don’t know who is shooting,” said David Albert, a free-lance journalist who lives in Tbilisi.
About 200 men armed with automatic weapons took over the television building, witnesses said.
Tengiz Sigua, one of the leaders of the activists opposed to Gamsakhurdia, had been given permission earlier in the day to deliver a speech on television, witnesses said. But he approached the television station with a small army of men carrying weapons who clashed with government militia and forced their way into the building, the witnesses said.
