SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Occidental Beats Pomona, 31-9
Derrick Williams completed eight of 16 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown as Occidental defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 31-9, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at Pomona.
Occidental, 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the SCIAC, had 473 yards in offense. Pomona-Pitzer (0-2, 0-1) had 176.
Occidental’s Brian Madlangbayan and Gary Little each rushed for 70 yards.
La Verne 12, Whittier 2--Phelan Piestrup gained 139 yards in 22 carries and scored two touchdowns to lift the Leopards (1-1) over the Poets (1-1) in an SCIAC game at La Verne.
San Diego 17, Redlands 14--Scott Sporrer rushed for 177 yards and Willie Branch added 109, including a 37-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave the Toreros the nonconference victory at Redlands.
Menlo 17, Claremont 7--Claremont quarterback Darren Gonzalez passed for 206 yards, but his fumble late in the second quarter resulted in a 61-yard scoring return that helped Menlo (1-2) to the nonconference victory over the Stags (0-2) at Menlo.
Sonoma State 27, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 7--Mike Williams scored on a 63-yard interception return that helped Sonoma State (2-1) to the nonconference victory over the Mustangs (0-2) at Rohnert Park.
