SOUTHWEST : Arkansas Defeats Southwestern Louisiana, 9-7
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Todd Wright kicked three field goals, including a 35-yarder with 12:01 left in the fourth quarter, as Arkansas came from behind to beat Southwestern Louisiana, 9-7, Saturday.
Wright, a junior who has made 12 consecutive field-goal attempts in Razorback Stadium, also was good from 27 and 38 yards.
Southwestern Louisiana had two chances to win late.
After Richie Cunningham missed a 25-yard attempt with 6:15 left, Southwestern Louisiana got another chance, taking over at the Razorback 45 after a 19-yard punt. But the Rajin’ Cajuns failed to capitalize.
Arkansas quarterback Jason Allen, playing in his first game since the Oklahoma high school championship game of 1989, completed nine of 19 passes for 109 yards and carried six times for 26 yards.
The Arkansas offense has scored only one touchdown in three games.
Southwestern Louisiana (0-4) led at halftime, 7-3.
Arkansas (2-1) closed to within 7-6 on Wright’s 38-yarder in the third quarter. The Razorbacks’ drive for the winning field goal started when Freddie Bradley made 11 yards on the option and Allen threw 20 yards over the middle to Tracy Caldwell.
Allen overcame second and 12 when he hooked up with Ron Dickerson for 14 yards and a first down at the Southwestern Louisiana 19.
Four plays later, Wright kicked the game-winner.
Southwestern Louisiana scored on its first possession, going 80 yards in six plays.
Arkansas came right back and reached the Southwestern Louisiana six, but Terrance Ross popped fullback Carlton Calvin, who fumbled. Robert Arvie recovered.
