NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Quarterback Calvillo Is Leading Mt. SAC Attack

Anthony Calvillo has been a passing whiz for the Mt. San Antonio College football team, which is unbeaten entering Saturday’s conference opener at home against Rancho Santiago.

Calvillo completed 19 of 30 passes for 229 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown pass play to Lorenzo White, as Mt. SAC defeated defending state-champion Taft, 26-14, on Saturday.

It was the second consecutive outstanding performance for Calvillo, who passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns in the Mounties’ 42-20 season-opening victory over San Diego Mesa.

Meanwhile, Pasadena City College also improved its record to 2-0 with a 34-7 victory over San Bernardino Valley College. PCC, which plays host to Southwestern College on Saturday, generated 265 yards on offense against San Bernardino as Darick Holmes gained 79 yards in 16 carries.

For the first time in seven years, Citrus is not 0-2 after its first two games. The Owls, who lost to Glendale College (Ariz.) in their opener two weeks ago, rebounded with a 36-29 victory over Los Angeles Southwest on Saturday. Ed Marquez broke a 29-29 tie when he scored on a three-yard run with 3:02 left in the game.

Citrus plays San Bernardino Valley on Saturday.

Point hungry: The Azusa Pacific football team enters Saturday’s game at Occidental searching for an offense that can score.

Two weeks ago, the Cougars got two touchdowns from its defense and another on a punt return during a 21-19 victory over then 16th-ranked Austin College of Texas. Azusa Pacific won despite being outgained, 402-48, and was ranked 13th in the National Collegiate of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II poll entering Saturday’s game at Humboldt State.

Azusa Pacific was shut out by Humboldt State, 35-0.

Occidental (1-0) is coming off a 31-9 victory over Pomona-Pitzer (0-2).

New era: It had been 43 years since anyone other than Roland Ortmayer coached the La Verne College football team to victory, but Rex Huigens did it on Saturday.

Huigens, an assistant under Ortmayer for 21 years, who is in his first season as coach of the Leopards, guided his team to a 12-2 victory over Whittier.

Freshman running back Phelan Piestrup gained 132 yards in 23 carries for La Verne. Piestrup is the leading rusher in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 94-yards-per-game average.

La Verne, which lost its opener to Redlands, will play at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

Good recruit: High-jumper Zhu Jianhua, a former world record holder from the People’s Republic of China, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Los Angeles and will compete for the Golden Eagles’ track team next spring.

Zhu, 28, set a world record when he leaped 7 feet, 9 3/4 inches in 1983 at a meet in Shanghai. He was the bronze medalist at the 1984 Olympics.
