Cudahy : Council to Hold Hearing on Whether to Annex 9 Acres
The City Council will hold a public hearing Friday to discuss the annexation of nine acres of Huntington Park’s industrial property that juts into Cudahy city limits.
The property lies on the east side of Salt Lake Avenue near Elizabeth Street and is the only portion of Huntington Park on the east side of Salt Lake Avenue and the Union Pacific railroad tracks. Huntington Park city officials already have agreed to give Cudahy the land.
“We wrote them a letter and argued that the land is already surrounded by Cudahy,” Cudahy City Manager Jack Joseph said. “We get the complaints about fumes or noise and there is nothing we can do about it. We have to refer people to Huntington Park.”
Joseph said that the site’s isolated location has made it difficult for Huntington Park city officials to provide police and fire services. Cudahy’s sales tax is not expected to increase dramatically if the council approves the annexation, Joseph said. About 10 businesses are located on the site, including an iron foundry and a substation of Southern California Edison Co.
The hearing will begin at 9 a.m. in the City Council chamber, 5220 Santa Ana St.
