FLICKS FILM AND VIDEO FILE : The Reel Radisson : ‘Round Trip to Heaven’ checks in at the Simi Valley hotel. ‘Lost Horizon’ will be screened in Ojai.
Rick Moranis stayed at the Radisson Hotel in Simi Valley when he was filming “Honey, I Blew Up the Baby.” And the crew from “Star Trek 6” checked into the hotel while they were in the area. So the folks at the Radisson could brag about being peripherally linked to the feature film industry.
Well, they’re not peripheral anymore. Over the past 11 days the Radisson has gotten in on some real feature film action. A film crew was supposed to wrap up production today on a Vertigo Pictures movie called “Round Trip to Heaven,” starring Corey Feldman.
“They’re using the pool area, the guest rooms, the hallways, the nightclub, the whole facility,” said Ray Burger, general manager of the hotel. “The guests seem to be enjoying it. It’s kind of a novelty to them.”
Herb Linsey, the movie’s line producer, described “Round Trip to Heaven” as “a comedy about the grass not being greener on the other side.” The story is about a guy who pursues a glamorous beauty queen only to find that the girl for him is the girl next door.
The Ojai Film Society on Sunday will show “Lost Horizon,” as part of a program benefiting the Ojai Day Community Festival on Oct. 12.
“Lost Horizon” is Frank Capra’s 1937 classic about a group of people who find themselves in Shangri-La. A couple of the panoramic shots of that fictitious, tranquil land were actually views of Upper Ojai, looking down from the Denisson Grade.
According to Ventura County historian Richard Senate, a bench along Highway 150 marked “Ojai Valley” is where the cameras were placed to film those scenes.
Said Senate: “As (actor) Ronald Colman entered through the snows of the Himalayas, he came to the other side and he saw . . . Ojai.”
There will be a canape and wine reception at MK’s restaurant before the showing of the movie at the Ojai Playhouse. A dinner at The Gaslight Restaurant and a slide show-lecture on the history of Ojai are scheduled for after the movie. Tickets are $10 (reception and movie) and $20 (reception, movie, dinner and slide show). The reception will be at 3:30 p.m., the movie at 4 p.m. and the dinner at 6:30 p.m. Call the Ojai Chamber of Commerce at 646-8126 to reserve a spot for either package.
