GOLF ROUNDUP : Determined Peoples Gets First Win
Perseverance has paid off for David Peoples, who went through the PGA qualifying school eight times in the 1980s.
Eight years after joining the PGA Tour, Peoples got his first victory in the Southern Open at Pine Mountain, Ga., with a one-stroke victory over Robert Gamez.
It was a come-from-behind win, as much of his career has been. Peoples shot a six-under-par 66 in the final round and finished 72-hole tournament over the Mountain View course at Callaway Gardens in 12-under 276.
Gamez shot a final-round 70. Nelson was at 279 after bogeying the 18th hole for a 72, tied for third with rookie David Sutherland, who had a 71.
Buddy Gardner, Dudley Hart and Morris Hatalsky shared fifth at 282. Gardner had a 69, Hart a 70 and Hatalsky a 72.
The victory earned Peoples $126,000, raising his earnings this year to a career-high $288,795.
DeWitt Weaver made a six-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat J.C. Snead in the senior tournament at Lexington, Ky.
Weaver shot a seven-under 65 on the Kearney Hill Golf Links to rally from five strokes down after two rounds. Snead, two strokes back, had a final-round 68 to force the playoff.
Weaver and Snead each finished the regulation 54 holes in nine-under 207. Larry Laoretti (68) and George Archer (70) tied for third at 208.
