Seniors Get Discounts at Oakwood Resorts

Oakwood Apartments is continuing its popular winter program for mature travelers at its 45 resort complexes, from Nov. 1 through April 30. Oakwood offers a 25% discount for people 55 years and over, with rates averaging $39 per day for a furnished one-bedroom apartment that includes utilities, color TV, linens, a kitchen and weekly maid service. Studios and two-bedroom units are also available, from $28.40 per day to $78.60 per day. Minimum stay is 30 days.

Most Oakwood apartments include swimming pools, spas, fitness centers, tennis courts and landscaped grounds. There are 24 Oakwood complexes in Southern California, four in Northern California and others in Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Five are also in Tokyo.

Tours to Israel have been resumed by A.J.S. Travel Consultants, which packages leisure vacations for seniors. Temporarily suspended during the Persian Gulf War, A.J.S. now offers a 22-day vacation, with two options, on El Al Israel Airlines from Los Angeles. The tours, offering a relaxed pace, feature six nights in Jerusalem, five nights in Tel Aviv, two nights in Galilee, and choice of a week either at the Dead Sea or in Tiberias.

The packages include accommodations, a buffet breakfast and dinner each day, use of hotel swimming pools, health clubs and saunas, historic sightseeing tours, entrance fees, tour escorts, transfers, baggage handling and evening entertainment.

Cost is from $1,455 to $2,122 per person, double occupancy, excluding air fare and depending on choice of dates and itinerary. El Al’s round-trip fare from Los Angeles ranges from $1,032 to $1,331.

Poole Tours, which specializes in escorted trips for the senior traveler, is offering an eight-day stay over Thanksgiving at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu that includes daily breakfasts and a Thanksgiving dinner and show. Cost is $1,299 per person, double occupancy, including round-trip air fare from Los Angeles. Departure date is Nov. 26.

The Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia, will be the site of Poole Tours’ “Old English Christmas.” The package includes four nights at the Empress and a welcome reception, three breakfasts, a hunter’s brunch, Christmas dinner, a dinner on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas), afternoon tea and a caroler’s parade. Per-person price is $1,339, double occupancy, which includes round-trip air fare from Los Angeles.

“A Club Med for Seniors” vacation program is being offered year-round by Senior Vacation Hotels of Florida, a group of four resort hotels on Florida’s west coast, near Tampa and St. Petersburg. Packages for one month cost about $22 per person, per day, including breakfasts and dinners. Visits must be for at least one month, and rates will be reduced for two or more months.

Packages include a welcome party, biweekly maid and linen service, movies and a bus to shopping and churches. Each hotel is close to water--lakes, rivers or the Gulf of Mexico.

Free events at each hotel and in nearby recreation areas include fashion shows, movies, live entertainment, weekly dances, picnics, country and Western nights, masquerade parties, bingo, card parties, shuffleboard and chess.

The hotels are within driving distance of Central Florida’s major entertainment attractions, including Disney World, Epcot Center, Sea World, Busch Gardens and Cypress Gardens.

Cost depends on hotel, the season and extra services. Minimum price is $650 per month, per person, double occupancy, from May to October. During February and March, monthly rates rise to $1,095 per person, double occupancy. Two-week stays are available from April through December at $495 per person, double occupancy.

Monthly rates for single occupancy are higher, from $775 to $1,250 per month.
