Saturday’s Orange County Cross-Country Championships at Irvine Park were a record-breaker.

In the girls’ seeded race, Edison senior Shelley Taylor and Sunny Hills sophomore Carrie Garritson broke the course mark of 17 minutes 26 seconds set last year by Katella’s Martha Pinto. Taylor ran 17:05 for three miles and both Garritson (17:13) and Irvine’s Jennifer Gillis (third in 17:51) ran faster than the previous sophomore best of 17:52 by Tustin’s Lori Reider in 1984, the year the present Irvine Park course was used for the first time.

Cross-country times--A prep note in Thursday’s Times incorrectly credited total-time bests at the Orange County Cross-Country Championships Saturday. The Edison girls had the lowest total time ever in the meet, the Irvine girls the third-best.

For the boys, Edison had the best total team time--1:03:24--run on this course but still narrowly lost the points race to Irvine, 89-91. Corona del Mar, in 1985, had the previous best total time of 93:49. Irvine’s 94:02 this year was third best ever.

In the boys’ seeded individual race, the 15:16 run by Laguna Hills’ Chris Lynch was 11th best ever. Cypress’ William Feliciano holds the record, 14:45 in 1984.
