Pratt & Whitney Offers Early Retirement: Pratt & Whitney offered an early retirement package to 4,700 workers as part of a plan to cut the company’s work force. Pratt, a division of Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies Corp., has said it would eliminate 4,000 positions by the end of 1993 because of cuts in defense spending. The company said it may announce a new downsizing plan soon, because it expects to reach its goal well before the target date. So far this year, the jet-engine maker has reduced its work force by 3,200 positions.
