Montano Sets Mark in El Modena Victory
TUSTIN — Senior wide receiver Jay Montano caught a school record 11 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown to lead fifth-ranked El Modena to a 35-8 Century League victory over Foothill Friday at Northrop Field.
The victory kept the Vanguards (8-0, 3-0) in a first-place tie with Villa Park in the league race.
Foothill (2-6, 1-2) fell to its second consecutive defeat and its fourth in the past five games.
El Modena amassed 384 yards of total offense. Running back Ernie Wilson rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jose Prado completed 16 of 27 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown. He threw four interceptions.
On the Vanguards’ opening two possessions, Wilson and James Clarkston scored on touchdown runs for a 14-0 lead. But Montano, who had 107 yards receiving in the second half, was the team’s main weapon. His touchdown catch in the third quarter gave the Vanguards a 21-0 lead with 6:44 left. Wilson added two touchdowns to complete the Vanguards’ scoring.
Foothill avoided being shut out when quarterback Tim Chaix scored on a 27-yard run with 5:44 left.
