Pay Raises for County Officials

Editor’s note: Because of an overwhelming response opposing the pay raise, the supervisors say they will rescind the raise they approved last week at this Tuesday’s session. Here is some of the reaction to the raise received from readers.

The U.S. national average of annual pay--for those individuals fortunate to be employed during this recession--is $22,567 per year.

Our public servants, the Orange County Board of Supervisors, have just voted themselves a pay raise to $85,336 yearly with an automatic boost in salary each year.

Sheriff Brad Gates, who has cost the taxpayers of Orange County millions of dollars in lawsuits, will now earn $110,136.

The fact that people do not vote or that they continue to vote for the same egregious individuals leads me to believe that we have given up on the system.
