Tragic End to the Umbrellas
The tragic, early, closing of Christo’s USA-Japan Umbrella Project leaves this mortal reader a lot to ponder. Why would anyone want to spend such a vast sum of his own money to alter or enhance the present, natural beauty of one of California’s most historic canyons? Walt Disney’s magic paintbrush could transform a drab landscape into a wonderful world of color but his art was mostly confined to the medium of film.
Mother Nature was swift to reclaim her territory from the artist and the trampling tourists with all her wrathful fury.
The artificial, temporary beauty of 1,760 yellow umbrellas was a mere flash in the pan in nature’s timetable. As a friend of mine so aptly put it, “Mother Nature may be slow but she sure is awesome.”
