ROUNDUP : Toro Women Advance to Final Four
The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Final Four with a 2-1 overtime victory over fourth-ranked Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. on Saturday.
The sixth-ranked Toros (16-4-1) had not come from behind to win a game in nearly two seasons before Saturday. They will play second-ranked Barry University of Florida in the semifinals next weekend at a site to be determined. Mercyhurst ends the season at 15-4-1.
“They had a good team, but we dominated,” Toro Coach Marine Cano said. “We just put relentless pressure on and gave them so many problems that they couldn’t get a rhythm. And once we began to control play, we took their crowd out of it and I think the team fed off of that.”
The winning goal came on a corner kick by freshman Joanna Enserro, who kicked the ball into the goalmouth, where junior forward Amy Rubin headed the ball into the net for her 17th goal.
Toro freshman forward Staci Blough scored her 15th goal to tie the score, 1-1, with 15:46 to play in regulation.
The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team defeated San Francisco, 15-12, 15-11, 15-8, in a West Coast Conference match at Gersten Pavilion Saturday night.
Senior Stacy Trapp had 13 kills and three blocks and freshman Tahlia Wagner had eight kills and nine digs to lead Loyola (15-12 overall, 7-6 in league play). Melanie Kaiser had 19 kills for San Francisco (6-16, 2-9).
Loyola plays at San Diego on Friday to finish league play. The Lions finish the regular season Nov. 19 at Cal State Northridge.
Dan Melendez, a St. Bernard High graduate who is now a junior at Pepperdine, hit a one-out ninth-inning double to drive in the winning run as the West defeated the North, 5-4, at the U.S. Olympic Baseball Trials Saturday in Homestead, Fla.
Melendez was two for five in Saturday’s game and one for three in the West’s 10-5 loss to the South Friday.
Chris Gomez, who transferred from Loyola Marymount to Cal State Long Beach earlier this year, was one for two Saturday. He did not play Friday.
The 88 players who participated in the trials will be notified in April or May if they will be among the 40 invited to a June training camp. At that camp, 20 players will be selected for the Olympic team.
