Toro Women Play Host to Soccer Final Four

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team will try to win the school’s first NCAA Division II title when it competes in the Final Four tournament this weekend at Carson.

Dominguez Hills, which joined the NCAA in 1980, will play Barry University of Miami Shores, Fla. in a semifinal match at 1 p.m. Saturday. Second-ranked Barry is 11-2-1, and sixth-ranked Dominguez Hills is 16-4-1. It is the first meeting between the schools.

Defending champion and top-ranked Sonoma State (16-1-2) will play fifth-ranked Adelphi of New York (14-3-1) in the other semifinal at 11 a.m. The winners play for the championship at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Dominguez Hills defeated fourth-ranked Mercyhurst, Pa., 2-1 in overtime Saturday to advance to the Final Four.

Dominguez Hills advanced to the Final Four in 1989, but lost in the semifinals.

Junior forward Amy Rubin leads the Toros with 17 goals and four assists for 38 points. Freshman forward Staci Blough has 15 goals and 32 points.

Both players scored goals in the Toros’ victory over Mercyhurst.

Sophomore goalie Briana O’Dowd has a 0.46 goals-against average and 12.5 shutouts.

Barry is making its fifth consecutive appearance in the Final Four. It won the 1989 national title.

The Lady Buccaneers received a bye in the first round of the playoffs. They have been led by junior forward Jennifer Shannon, who has 38 points, and senior forward Alayne Rott, who has 34.

Sophomore goalie Sherry Martin has an 0.67 goals-against average and six shutouts. As a team, Barry has nine shutouts.

A Dominguez Hills victory could set up a rematch against Sonoma State, which defeated the Toros, 1-0, in October.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team can clinch at least a tie for third place in the West Coast Conference when it plays UC San Diego at 7 tonight in San Diego.

Loyola (15-12 overall, 7-6 in league play) is fourth, and San Diego (17-11, 7-5) is tied for second with Santa Clara (18-10, 6-4).

Loyola defeated San Diego in three games on Sept. 28 at Loyola.

Last week, Loyola defeated St. Mary’s in four games and San Francisco in three.

Loyola travels to Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. Tuesday to end the season. Loyola lost to the Matadors in four games Sept. 24 at Loyola.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team plays host to Chapman in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at 7:30 tonight.

The Toros, who defeated conference rival Cal State Los Angeles on Tuesday in five games, are 17-20 overall and 3-7 in CCAA play.

Dominguez Hills was 2-2 last week, defeating Southern Colorado and Western New Mexico and losing to UC Riverside and Grand Canyon of Arizona.

Chapman, which defeated Dominguez Hills in three games earlier this season, is ranked 20th in the NCAA Division II. It is 20-15 and 7-3.

Dominguez Hills concludes its 1991 season with a conference match against 12th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The El Camino College men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete in the state championships Saturday at Sierra College in Northern California.

Both teams finished 3-1 in South Coast Conference play. The men qualified for the state meet by placing third at the Southern California Regional earlier this month, and the women finished fourth.

The Warrior men have been led by sophomores Ryan Winn and Richard Raya and freshman Steve Gonzalez. The women have been led by sophomores Mary K. Ludlow and Tanya Acosta.

Loyola Marymount will be playing for a berth in the NCAA championships when it competes in the fifth annual Western Water Polo Assn. Championship Tournament today through Sunday at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.

The Lions (10-15) are seeded seventh in the tournament in their first season under Coach Doug Pitts. They will meet second-seeded Air Force to open the tournament.

Loyola has been led by Charlie Wallace, who has 39 goals.

UC San Diego is the top-seeded team.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s and women’s basketball teams will play exhibition games against the Latvian National Team on Saturday at Toro Gym.

The women’s game is at 5:45 p.m., and the men play at 8:05 p.m. The Dominguez Hills men finished 16-11 last season, and the women were 15-11.

The third annual South Bay Baseball Camp, for youths ages 7 to 17 will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 21 through 24 at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach.

Among the instructors will be former Loyola Marymount infielder Chris Donnels, who plays for the New York Mets.
