HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Torrey Pines Knocks Out No. 1 Serra

Torrey Pines (6-9), the last team to gain an at-large entry into the eight-team San Diego Section field hockey tournament, proved Tuesday its regular-season victory over Serra wasn’t an accident.

The Falcons shocked the top-seeded Conquistadors in the first round, 1-0, in overtime as senior left link April Alexander took a pass from sophomore center forward Stacy Schweighart and scored with about one minute left in the 10-minute extra period.

Serra, the defending section champion, ended its season at 12-2. Both losses came against Torrey Pines, a team that finished the regular season 7-7 but had to forfeit two games.

Entering the 1991 playoffs again as the No. 1 seed, Serra had won 10 of the past 12 section championships. But it struggled against Torrey Pines this year, splitting two regular-season games that ended in strokes.

“It’s probably a tough draw for us,” Serra Coach Laurie Berger said. “I think their record is deceiving. Every game we’ve played (against the Falcons) were tough ones.”

Berger, in her seventh season as coach, can’t remember an earlier exit for Serra in the championships.

“I’m not sure if we’ve ever lost in the first round,” she said. “(The players are) pretty bummed.”

Other games:

Fourth-seeded Fallbrook (12-4) defeated San Marcos (11-7) on strokes, 1-0. Dawn Pederson, two-time player of the year in the North County Conference, scored the game winner.

No. 3-seeded Rancho Buena Vista (15-3) scored 20 seconds into the game and again with 1:18 left in overtime to outlast Bishop’s, 2-1. Senior left forward Jeni Watson scored on a fast break at game’s start and sophomore center Reina Hiscox scored the game-winner, after the Knights’ Alexa Fontanini tied it, 1-1, with less than four minutes to go in regulation. RBV outshot Bishop’s (10-9) on goal, 21-1.

Second-seeded Hilltop (17-2) eliminated San Dieguito (9-10), 4-0. Soida Barajas scored two goals in the first half, then Megan Mahoney scored twice in the second half for the Lancers.

Girls’ Tennis

Nine of the top 10 seeds cruised to straight-set victories in the first and second rounds of girls’ individual section tennis championships at La Jolla High and The Bishop’s School. Seventh-seeded Mary Beth Maggart of Rancho Bernardo was the only seeded player to be extended to three sets. She defeated Erin Lowery of University of San Diego High, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

The third and quarterfinal rounds of singles and doubles will be played today at Bishop’s and La Jolla.

Water Polo 3-A quarterfinals

Unseeded Coronado upset fourth-seeded Granite Hills 15-9 behind Jono Johnson’s six goals. Goalie David Meyers had 12 saves for Coronado (25-4). Rhett Gaeir led Granite Hills with five goals.

Coronado will play top-seeded Poway (25-4), a 19-11 winner over Vista, in the semifinals Thursday night at 5:30 at the Jewish Community Center.

Second-seeded Monte Vista (20-3) will play third-seeded Fallbrook (21-7) in the other semifinal at 7.

2-A Quarterfinals

Alex Beck almost single-handedly led unseeded Army-Navy to a 13-12 upset of third-seeded USDHS (14-11). Beck, a two-meter man, scored nine goals, including the winning goal in sudden-death overtime.

Army-Navy (9-17) will play second-seeded Bishop’s, a 12-4 winner over La Jolla, in the semifinals Thursday (7 p.m.) at El Cajon High. Pat Buchanan led Bishop’s (21-5) with three goals.

No. 1 seeded Valhalla (24-2) will play unseeded University City in the other semifinal at 5:30. Valhalla, led by Josh White’s six goals, defeated Clairemont 25-6. University City beat El Capitan, 13-12, behind David Chavez’s six goals.

Girls’ Volleyball Division IV

Holtville and Clairemont advanced to Friday’s finals at Mira Mesa (8 p.m.) with victories over Coronado and Gompers.

Division V

Bishop’s reached the finals with a 15-13, 15-10, 12-15, 15-7, victory over Julian. Bishop’s (13-8) got 13 kills from Kielty Gallagher and 12 from Kai Enos. Bishop’s will play top-seeded Christian (22-5), which defeated Marian in five games, Friday (5:30) at Mira Mesa High.
