Ireland’s 79-Yard Return Hands Santa Margarita a Victory
COLTON — Josh Ireland ran back a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown with 4 minutes 27 seconds left in the game Friday night to lead Santa Margarita to a 29-22 victory over Colton in the first round of the Southern Section Division V playoffs.
The Eagles (7-3-1) will play Palm Desert in the quarterfinals Friday.
Colton (8-3) came back from a 21-7 deficit and took a 22-21 lead after Ronnie Rangle caught an eight-yard pass from quarterback David Jones.
On the ensuing kickoff, Joe Chammas hit a low, line-drive kick. Ireland muffed the ball at the 11, picked it up, then raced down the left sideline virtually untouched for the score. The Eagles added a two-point conversion.
