COLLEGE BASKETBALL VENTURA TOURNAMENT : Ventura Advances to Final With Overtime Victory
Maurice Smith’s three-point basket with 3 minutes 50 seconds left in overtime held up to give host Ventura College an 86-85 victory over L.A. City in the Ventura college basketball tournament on Friday night.
Smith finished with 11 points and guard Reggie Phillips added a team-high 23 points to help send Ventura (4-0) into the championship game tonight at 6 against Antelope Valley.
Ventura opened its biggest lead, 64-55, on a fast-break basket by Michael Tate with 13 minutes left. But a scoring drought that lasted 4:20 let L.A. City back into the game.
Ronald Kenley had a game-high 30 points for L.A. City (1-3).
In other tournament games:
Antelope Valley 93, L.A. Harbor 79--D.J. Jackson scored 20 of his game-high 34 points in the second half to help the Marauders (2-1) hold off the Seahawks.
Guards Tracy Acquaah and Chris Walters each scored 15 points for Antelope Valley and forward Bucky Tucker added 14.
Harbor (3-1), which had 20-point performances from Eric Carpenter and Joe Zaletel, will play L.A. City in the third-place game today.
Oxnard 76, Moorpark 65--James Parker scored 21 points and Shawn Talley added 18 as Oxnard (2-2) handed Moorpark (1-3) its second consecutive tournament loss.
Forward Tony Ziuraitis had 14 points for Oxnard.
Damian Wilson scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, but it was not enough to bring the Raiders back from a 38-29 halftime deficit. Jimmy Galbert added 12 points and Matt Weaver and Steve Carnes each had 10 for Moorpark, which was eliminated.
Santa Barbara City also was eliminated after losing to Hancock, 73-59, in the consolation round.
