HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Last-Second Field Goal Gives Rio Mesa Upset
McLane Hansen kicked a 27-yard field goal with two seconds left to give visiting Oxnard Rio Mesa a 10-7 victory over No. 1-seeded Royal in a Southern Section Division III game Friday at Moorpark College.
Gordy Abellera led Rio Mesa (8-3), which had an at-large berth, with 130 yards in 22 carries.
Rio Mesa gained 260 total yards against a Royal, which had given up an average of 176.2 per game. Royal had given up an average of only 53.4 on the ground, but gave up a season-high 198 to the Spartans.
Royal needed only seven plays to drive 80 yards on the opening series and score on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Fien to tight end Carlos Gonzales with 8:47 left in the first quarter. Fien completed 12 of 19 passes for 73 yards.

Santa Ana Mater Dei 34, Quartz Hill 8--Billy Blanton, who completed 11 of 13 passes for 127 yards, threw for three touchdowns to David Knuff to lead visiting Mater Dei (10-1) in a Division I game.
Long Beach Wilson 17, Riverside Poly 14--Kevin McKenzie rushed for 90 yards and Brady Dunn completed 12 of 16 passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns to lead Wilson (9-2-0) in a Division I game at home.
San Diego Mira Mesa 28, Rancho Buena Vista 21--Chad Davis of Mira Mesa became the career high school passing leader by throwing for 102 yards to surpass the record of 9,182 set by Todd Marinovich at Mission Viejo and Capistrano Valley High Schools from 1984-87.
The record-setting pass was a 21-yard completion in the left flat to wide receiver Daryle Owen in the third quarter. Davis finished with eight completions in 20 attempts with one interception and ran for touchdowns of one, two and 34 yards.
La Puente Nogales 22, Whittier 14--In a Division IV game, Lamonte Adams rushed for 132 yards in 24 carries for host Nogales (10-0-1).
Huntington Park 26, Van Nuys Grant 0--Adrian Fernandez scored a touchdown and gained 110 yards in 15 carries while Albert Saladana completed five of 10 passes for 90 yards for host Huntington Park (10-0-1) in a City 3-A game.
Pico Rivera El Rancho 13, Upland 10--Chris Loera rushed for 196 yards in 23 carries for El Rancho (10-1-0).
Santa Margarita 29, Colton 22--Josh Ireland scored on a 76-yard kickoff return with four minutes left to lift visiting Santa Margarita (7-3-1) in a Division V game.
Montebello Schurr 20, Palos Verdes Peninsula 6--Robert Gonzalez caught a 36-yard scoring pass from Ray Donahue, scored on a 36-yard interception return, kicked field of goals of 35 and 33 yards and added two extra points for Schurr (9-2) in a Division III game at Montebello High.
Inglewood Morningside 28, Ojai Nordhoff 7--The visiting Monarchs (7-3) scored 21 third-quarter points in the Division VIII game.
