OUTLOOK
Clear, the first-year coach, starts the season with one noticeable handicap . . . her point guard is playing softball. Mellisa Weilandt, one of the top point guards in the league last season, is skipping basketball this year to hone her skills as the third baseman for the Knights’ softball team. Dawson, who averaged 10 points per game and earned second-team all-league honors last season, is Foothill’s top returner. Olave is trying to rebound from last season’s knee surgery, and Clear will also count on her for senior leadership. Foothill’s top newcomer is Wallace, who was the most valuable player for the junior varsity. “We have some good size,” Clear said. “One of our goals is to be the best rebounding team in the league.” At 6-1, Vasquez is the tallest of the Foothill newcomers, and center-forward Kooi also impressed Clear during tryouts. With all the question marks, Clear hopes the Knights can weather a brutal nonleague schedule. Foothill plays Mater Dei, Estancia, Cypress and is also entered in the Brea-Olinda and Marina tournaments. “Hopefully we can stay competitive early,” Clear said. But last season, after the Knights struggled through an 0-12 nonleague schedule, they still rallied to finish third in the league.
