$3 Million for City of Hope Institute

City of Hope Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute will receive more than $3 million for patient care, scientific research and medical education in such major diseases as leukemia. Proceeds were raised by City of Hope’s Food Industries Circle at its 16th annual Harvest Ball Nov. 22 at the Century Plaza. Since its founding in 1973, the circle has raised more than $26 million for the medical center.

* Project Love, an organization of McDonnell Douglas employees, will give 9,000 Christmas presents valued at $135,000 to American Indian children on the Navajo and Hopi reservations. The announcement came at a Nov. 15 party hosted by John McNaughton of Best Western Golden Sails Hotel in Long Beach. Bruce Cunningham is president of Project Love.

* Daniel Freeman Hospitals’ Auxiliary Guild raised $5,000 at its pre-ball party, a preview of the 40th annual Christmas Tree Ball to be held on Dec. 7 at the Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey. The events benefit Daniel Freeman hospitals in Inglewood and Marina del Rey; both are nonprofit facilities sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

* South Bay Center for Counseling has announced receipt of a $5,000 check from Toyota USA. The money will be used for counseling services.

* Neighborhood Youth Assn., a United Way Agency, has received a $40,000 matching grant from the James Irvine Foundation after raising more than $80,000 in donations from individuals in fiscal year 1990-’91. The grant will be used in support of the association’s Las Doradas Children’s Center in the Oakwood area of Venice.

* Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Center for Motion Picture Study announced receipt of a $1-million contribution from the Cecil B. DeMille Trust for the center’s endowment fund. The reading room of the Margaret Herrick Library, in the soon-to-be-completed center in Beverly Hills, will be named in honor of DeMille.

* Shelter Partnership has received more than $46,000 from the following organizations: $22,000 from California Community Foundation to support the Shelter Resource bank project; a $7,500 grant from Permanent Charities Committee for ongoing work and $10,441 from the Benson & Hedges Blues Concert. Shelter Partnership is a nonprofit organization that develops resources and housing opportunities for the homeless.

* Los Angeles Center for Living/Project Angel Food’s “Divine Design and Fantasy Auction,” held Sept. 29 at the Santa Monica Airport, raised $750,000 to be used to move the center’s facilities to expand meal delivery services to people with AIDS. Event chairpersons were Waldo Fernandez, Marianne Williamson and Michael Childers.

* Motion Picture and Television Fund has received a $10,000 check from the Warner Center Marriott Hotel. The check represents a percentage of profits from movie and television production companies that have used the hotel in the past year.

* AltaMed Services Corp. received a grant of $100,000 Oct. 18 from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation for support of AltaMed’s new Senior Health and Activity Center. The center is the only facility in the East Los Angeles area to provide elderly Latinos with comprehensive medical and social services. It will also serve as a research, teaching and training site for university faculty, students and community practitioners in the field of aging.

* Chris Brownlie AIDS Hospice will receive $2,000 for its kitchen facility from restaurateur Tommy Tang. The gift represents proceeds raised Oct. 30 at a signing party at Tang’s restaurant for his new book, “Modern Thai Cuisine.”

* City Hearts, a nonprofit organization that provides inner city children with classes in the performing and visual arts, will receive $24,000 to aid its program. The money was raised at a celebrity arts auction hosted by Jane Seymour and Edward James Olmos on Nov. 3, at the Stanley Holden Dance Center in West Los Angeles.

* Vista del Mar Child and Family Services has announced receipt of more than $350,000 raised by the Associates of Vista del Mar at a June 9 benefit that included a performance of “City of Angels” and dinner. Event chairs were Pamela Schuman and Audrey Gronsky. Jean Leserman is Associates president.
