SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION VI FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Tustin’s Miller Leads Shutout Over Bassett
TUSTIN — This rematch was a replay.
With quarterback Jon Miller throwing two touchdown passes and running for two more, Tustin blanked Bassett, 28-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Division VI playoffs Friday at Northrup Field.
The third-seeded Tillers (11-1) will meet University in next Friday’s semifinal. Tustin defeated University, 12-6, this season.
It was the second consecutive time Tustin had shut out the Olympians (7-5) in the playoffs. Last year, the Tillers recorded a 34-0 victory in the opening round.
This time, Tustin used a 14-point third quarter to pull away. Miller, who gave Tustin a 7-0 halftime lead on a one-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter, added another one to cap the opening drive of the second half.
Then, Miller connected on a pair of touchdown passes, to tight end Nick Coo and wide receiver Albert Ewens, for the final margin.
Miller completed 9 of 10 passes for 160 yards. The Tillers finished with 356 yards total offense.
Although Tustin played without leading rusher Maurice Fletcher, running backs Jason Powell and Keith Thomas combined for 150 yards rushing.
Tustin’s defense limited Bassett to 82 yards total offense, four yards passing and five first downs.
