TRUST US: Be wary of “Two Rooms--Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin.” The Polydor album was designed to salute the songwriting talents of the British team by inviting 16 prominent artists to interpret their favorite John-Taupin compositions.

But most of the selections--including the contributions of Jon Bon Jovi, Hall & Oates, Kate Bush, Joe Cocker and the Who--are decidedly ordinary. A bit stronger word is needed to describe the damage inflicted by Wilson Phillips on “Daniel.” Ironically, hearing all these other singers on the material reminds us how excellent a singer John is. And John’s singing is one reason the “Two Rooms . . .” video on PolyGram does deserve checking out.

A few of the artists from the album--including Eric Clapton and Sting--also sing briefly on the PolyGram release, but it’s mostly John at the microphone--and he exhibits in these concert clips the authority and grace that have always distinguished his records. Added video bonus: frequently insightful interviews with John and Taupin.
