PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Free Throws Carry Capistrano Valley in Double Overtime

Forward Steve Ransom made two free throws with two seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give Capistrano Valley a 62-60 victory over Lakewood in the second round of the Tournament of Champions Thursday at Ocean View High.

Lakewood’s Terrance Brown was called for an intentional foul when he grabbed Ransom’s jersey as he drove past him and through the lane. Ransom, who had made only five of 11 previous free throw attempts, calmly made both shots to send Capistrano Valley (5-1) into today’s semifinal against Mater Dei (6-0) at 4 p.m.

Capistrano Valley had an 11-point lead, 51-40, late in the fourth quarter but Lakewood (4-2) rallied for 10 consecutive points in a 90-second span and sent the game into overtime when guard Tamar Ross made a three-point shot with 10 seconds remaining in regulation play.
