HOCKEY
The Gulls and XEK-AM radio have reached an agreement to broadcast the remainder of the Gulls’ home and away 1991-92 International Hockey League games.
Beginning with tonight’s game against Kansas City (5:35 p.m. start), the Gulls’ games will be aired live, with Ron Oakes handling the play-by-play. In the previous agreement, only select road games were heard, most on a delayed basis.
FOOTBALL
Stanford running back Tommy Vardell, a Granite Hills High graduate, was a first-team University Division selection to the Academic All-America team, chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Vardell, a senior industrial engineering major, has a 3.2 average. He rushed for 1,084 yards and 20 touchdowns, helping the Cardinal to an 8-3 record.
BASEBALL
Dick Kelley, an original Padre, died Wednesday at Northridge Community Hospital, four weeks after suffering a heart attack. He was 51.
A left-handed pitcher, Kelley was the team’s 14th selection in the 1968 expansion draft that stocked the team. Kelley started 23 games in 1969, and had a 4-8 record with a 3.57 earned run average. Kelley was 2-3 in 1971, his final season in the major leagues.
Kelley began his major league career in 1964 with the Milwaukee Braves. His best season came in 1966, the team’s first in Atlanta, when he was 7-5, his only winning record in seven major league seasons. Kelley’s career record was 18-30.
Kelley lived in south Orange County the past 10 years, working for a Costa Mesa mortgage company and running a Mission Viejo pitching school.
