Okada Upset in His Opening Match at Judo Trials
Tony Okada’s quest for a berth on the U.S. Olympic team has been placed on hold for four weeks.
The Stanton resident and 1991 Savanna High graduate was seeded first in the 60-kilogram (132-pound) class in the preliminary U.S. Olympic judo trials, but was upset by fifth-seeded John Matsuoka of Daly City in his opening match Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Okada will have a second and final chance to qualify for the Olympics on Feb. 8, when he faces Eddie Liddie, in a best-of-three series of matches in Colorado Springs. Liddie advanced by defeating Matsuoka in the final.
