Cerritos was picked to finish near the bottom of the San Gabriel Valley League this year, but if the first week of league play is any indication, the Dons can’t be overlooked. Williams led Cerritos by scoring at total of 48 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in two games last week. He also had seven steals and seven blocked shots. Williams scored 28 points in a 66-53 loss to Lynwood, considered the league’s best team. Friday he scored 20 points and had nine rebounds in leading Cerritos to a stunning overtime upset of powerhouse Dominguez, 64-62.
Other top performers:
* Michael O’Quinn, who had 67 points and 18 rebounds as Pius X started Camino Real League competition with victories over Verbum Dei and Serra.
* Torrey Johnson, who scored 15 points, including the final seven points of the game, to lead Wilson to a 50-49 upset of Lakewood in the Moore League opener.
