SEA VIEW LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Saddleback Wins in Final Two Seconds
Jason Register banked in a 14-foot jump shot with two seconds remaining to give the Saddleback boys’ basketball team a 74-72 Sea View League victory over Newport Harbor Wednesday at Newport Harbor High School.
Wade Tift’s off-balance, 15-footer for Newport Harbor at the buzzer missed the basket, and Saddleback (11-7, 3-1 in league) remained in second place in the league standings behind Tustin.
With 12 seconds remaining and Saddleback leading, 72-70, Newport Harbor’s Justin McIntee, whom Register defended the entire game, drove around Rob Holloway for a game-tying layup.
Then came Register’s shot, which erased an outstanding effort by Newport Harbor’s trio of Mark McAnlis (20), McIntee (18), and Eric Vallely (18). Mike Ofer added 12 points for Newport Harbor (10-8, 2-2).
Both teams shot a combined 78% in the first quarter when Saddleback took a 24-22 lead. McAnlis scored 18 of his points in the first half, including four three-pointers. Vallely made five of eight three-pointers.
Chris Bradshaw countered with three three-pointers and finished with 16 points for Saddleback. Teammate Luis Estrella added 15 points.
