Library Renamed
The Los Angeles Public Library has renamed its Venice Branch the Venice--Abbot Kinney Memorial Branch Library in honor of the Venice founder.
Kinney, an early advocate of public libraries, suggested the creation of a branch in Venice and before his death in 1920, prepared to donate a site. The library was later built on California Avenue and dedicated in 1930.
The Venice Historical Society initiated the name-change proposal with a petition signed by 500 residents, and it was adopted unanimously by the Board of Library Commissioners last month.
