Howard Hangs ‘Em Up: Howard Cosell, he of the stentorian speech, punctilious prose and caustic Phi Beta Kappa style of reporting, will retire from the ABC Radio Network at the end of January, almost 40 years after he gave up a law career to go into broadcasting. Cosell, 73, has been doing a daily sportscast and a weekly half-hour interview program for ABC Radio. He quit television in 1985, after “telling it like it is” on ABC’s football, baseball and boxing shows for many seasons. Cosell underwent surgery last June to remove a cancerous tumor from his chest, but reports that he is in good health now.
