Edwards Commits to Play for Aztecs

Freddie Edwards, a defensive back from Antelope Valley High, said Tuesday night that he has orally committed to play football at San Diego State.

“Their program is going to be good next year,” Edwards said. “And I like the fact that if I don’t make it with football, if I get hurt, I’ll be able to live in San Diego and get my degree and be happy.”

Edwards, an all-state player who had five interceptions last fall, also visited Washington, Hawaii and Utah.

He is at least the fifth player who has visited a Pac-10 school and then decided on SDSU.

“Playing in the Pac-10 would be nice, but it was never really a strong dream of mine,” said Edwards, who lives with Peter Holt, an Antelope Valley kicker who has also orally committed to SDSU this season. “When I was younger, I wanted to play for USC, but times change.”

Earlier this week, SDSU received an oral commitment from Lincoln’s Scott Hammond, a defensive back who visited Oklahoma, Washington and Fresno State. Hammond, one of the state’s best sprinters, is a Parade All-American.

“He has speed and jumping ability,” said Lincoln assistant coach Roy Reed. “And he’s tougher than he looks.”

SDSU has now received commitments from at least 13 players. The first day high school players can officially sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 5.
