HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cleveland Left With 4 Players in Conference Loss to Chatsworth
Cleveland High suited up only five players and played the final two minutes with only four after James McWilliams fouled out in a 71-63 loss to host Chatsworth in a Northwest Valley Conference basketball game Wednesday.
Junior center Brady Mertes scored 23 points and added nine rebounds to lead Chatsworth.
Jeremy DeGracia (25 points) and Shawn Bankhead (22) led Cleveland (4-11, 1-2 in league play). Dennis Byrd added 20 points and eight rebounds for Chatsworth (11-4, 3-0).
Ken Manor (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Christian Dunbar (10 points, nine assists) also scored in double figures for Chatsworth.
In other boys’ games:
El Camino Real 94, Granada Hills 57--Junior forward Markee Brown scored 35 points to lead El Camino Real (3-8, 1-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.
The Conquistadores made 43 of 52 shots from the field. They made four of four three-point attempts and four of four free throws.
Jaffers Bailey added 20 points for El Camino Real. Shelton Simmons had 23 for Granada Hills.
Poly 60, Sherman Oaks CES 59--Visiting Poly took its first lead with one minute to play in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Henry Lopez scored all of his 15 points in the second half, six coming on two three-point baskets. Lopez’s second long shot gave the Parrots the lead, 57-56.
John Cannon led Sherman Oaks (10-8, 4-2) with 22 points, and teammate Mitch Shenkin scored 15, 13 in the second half.
Kennedy 74, San Fernando 60--Shauhin Talesh (22 points) and Joe Wyatt (20) combined for 42 points to lead the visiting Golden Cougars (13-4, 2-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Jerome Elliott scored 19 for San Fernando (6-7, 0-3), which lost for the fourth time in a row.
Buena 90, Hueneme 72--Lance Fay had 31 points and Nick Houchin and Doug Wilder each added 17 for visiting Buena (15-3, 8-0) in a Channel League game. Windell Nunnery had 15 points for Hueneme.
Oak Park 63, St. Bonaventure 60--David Shaw had 19 points and 13 rebounds as host Oak Park (5-10, 1-3) won its first Tri-Valley League game since the 1989-90 season. Grey Hubbard led St. Bonaventure with 14 points.
Alemany 83, St. Bernard 81 (OT)--Richard Dice scored a season-high 43 points to lead Alemany (10-10, 4-4) in a Mission League game at St. Bernard.
Dice scored 18 of Alemany’s 23 points in the fourth quarter and all seven of the team’s points in overtime to spark the upset.
Grant 79, Sylmar 37--Wayne Carlisle had 26 points and 11 rebounds as visiting Grant improved to 4-2 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play. Chi Chin (13 points) and Chris Fields (10 points, 13 rebounds) also scored in double figures for Grant (10-6 overall).
Fremont 95, Van Nuys 47--Eric Grayson had 14 points, but visiting Van Nuys (4-14) fell in a nonleague game.
North Hollywood 88, Monroe 39--Host North Hollywood rolled to a 28-9 first-quarter lead and improved to 17-1 overall and 4-0 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play.
Robert Hill (17 points), DeShawn Harvey (15), Damon Ollie (14) and Anson Credille (13) scored in double figures for North Hollywood. Monroe fell to 5-6, 2-3.
Canoga Park 65, Birmingham 53--Sophomore forward Charles Adams scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead Canoga Park in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home.
Newbury Park 69, Camarillo 52--Robert Fick had 22 points for Newbury Park in a Marmonte league game. Geoff Gordon scored 12 for host Camarillo.
Royal 68, Westlake 54--Brett Osterhoudt scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the third quarter to lead visiting Royal (7-11, 4-4) in a Marmonte League game.
Agoura 71, Channel Islands 55--Eddie Corridori scored 21 points to lead visiting Agoura (11-6, 4-4) in a Marmonte League game.
Carpinteria 57, Moorpark 52--John McCoy scored 18 points to lead Carpinteria (12-6, 3-1) to a Tri-Valley League win.
GIRLS
El Camino Real 63, Granada Hills 55 (2 OTs)--Mytra Ramezani scored 16 points to lead host El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Canoga Park 52, Birmingham 39--Annette Convany scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds to lead visiting Canoga Park in a Pac-8 Conference game.
Reseda 56, Taft 29--Cha-Ron Walker scored 18 points and Nedra Chambers added 16, leading visiting Reseda in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Grant 50, Sylmar 39--Sarah Glover had 15 points and 10 rebounds for host Grant (7-3, 3-0) in an East Valley League game.
Cleveland 33, Chatsworth 29 (OT)--Myisha Hatfield scored 16 points and Marsha Brown added 12 for host Cleveland in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
North Hollywood 57, Monroe 35--Karma Goodman scored 14 points to lead North Hollywood (11-3, 5-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe.
Kennedy 53, San Fernando 24--Shaneya Harris had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Charlene Ching added 13 points for Kennedy (9-5, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Burroughs 44, Hart 37--Jeanie Russell had 16 points and eight rebounds for Burroughs (13-6, 4-1) in a Foothill League game.
