Court Hearing on Sex Charges Postponed

An Antelope Municipal Court judge on Thursday issued a continuance until March 2 for the preliminary hearing of former Antelope Valley College football players David Brown, Bradley Cole Jr. and Gene Washington.

The three Lancaster men have each been charged on one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. They were named in the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl at a Lancaster apartment on the morning of Oct. 5, 1991.

Brown and Cole, both 20, and Washington, 22, were scheduled to appear in court Thursday but the hearing was postponed because Roy Wallen, a defense attorney for Cole, is involved in another trial.

All three were sophomores on the Antelope Valley team last season.

The Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team will play an alumni squad in an exhibition match Saturday at 5 p.m. at Matador Gymnasium. The alumni team features Northridge assistant Jeff Campbell and Raphael Tulino, a standout the past three seasons.

Dave Rubio, the former girls’ volleyball coach at Westlake High and women’s coach at Cal State Bakersfield, has been hired as the women’s coach at Arizona.

Rubio, 32, coached Bakersfield from 1987-91. The Roadrunners were 120-65 under Rubio and won the NCAA Division II title in 1989.

Rubio played volleyball at Granada Hills High in 1976 and ‘77, at Pierce College in 1978 and ‘79, and at Cal State Northridge in 1981 and ’82. He graduated from Northridge in 1982 with a degree in physical education.

The West Valley Girls’ Softball organization will conduct tryouts and accept registration Saturday and again Feb. 8 at Hale Junior High in West Hills. The league is open to girls ages 7 to 15.

The St. Genevieve High baseball team will sponsor a daylong fund-raiser Saturday that features a sports card show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clinics for coaches and parents will begin at 9 a.m. and a clinic for players between the ages of 8 and 13 will start at 1 p.m.

Kim Gallagher, Suzy Favor Hamilton and Dan Ripley will be among the featured speakers at the Sunkist Invitational track and field clinic at Birmingham High on Feb. 8.

Ron Allice, men’s cross-country and track coach at Long Beach City College, will direct the clinic, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Gallagher is a two-time Olympic medalist in the women’s 800 meters and Favor Hamilton won the women’s 1,500 in The Athletics Congress championships in 1990 and ’91.

Ripley, the women’s cross-country and track coach at Long Beach City, is a former world indoor record-holder in the pole vault.

Racquetball World in Canoga Park will hold its third open tournament in conjunction with Valentine’s Day.

The three-day Heartbreakers Open ‘92, beginning Feb. 7, will stage competition in 19 divisions for men and women, according to tournament director Debbie Tisinger. Cash prizes will be awarded in three open classifications in addition to men’s 35 and over.

UNLV basketball standout J. R. Rider was named co-player of the week in the Big West Conference, along with UC Santa Barbara’s Lucius Davis, after leading the Rebels to a pair of wins last week.

Rider, a junior transfer from Antelope Valley College, had 26 points in a 74-67 win at New Mexico State on Saturday and 11 in a 58-50 win over visiting Fresno State last Thursday. He is averaging 20.6 points a game.
