Don’t talk to me about “choice” in education, as Lamar Alexander advocates in allowing families to use tax funds to send their children to any school, including private ones. It will still benefit only a few of our children based on one’s ability to play the system.
What happened to the American commitment to public education? Whites, fleeing integration, have abandoned public schools, but that doesn’t mean that we should turn away from them. If public schools were given the focus they need, maybe that flight could be reversed. Magnet school experiments have shown just that.
