Promoting ‘Buy American’

In response to “Council to Draft City ‘Buy American’ Policy,” Feb. 6:

Buy American? Let’s go all the way and Buy Californian!

My wife works for Toyota--not in Tokyo or Detroit but in Torrance (California, that is). Southern California is home to thousands of happy employees who work for Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Daihatsu and Suzuki--to say nothing of Lexus, Acura and Infiniti. My wife, her co-workers and I believe that “America First” means they be given a fair chance to sell a quality product at a competitive price.

Not so, says Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky and his colleagues. Anxious to join in Lee Iacocca’s thinly veiled racist attack, Yaroslavsky takes the lead in exporting California jobs and tax dollars to Michigan.

Zev, “buy the best product at the lowest price.” Don’t clutter your mind with who made it--even if it came from Michigan.
