BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Show’s Cut Hands Stump Athletics

The Oakland Athletics are deciding what to do with pitcher Eric Show, who arrived at training camp Friday with both hands bandaged because of cuts on his hands and fingers.

Show, who missed practice in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Tuesday and didn’t tell the A’s he had returned to his home in San Diego, apparently didn’t give team officials what they believed was a valid explanation of the injuries. The cuts required stitches at a Phoenix-area hospital.

Show, 35, joined the A’s last year as a free-agent after nine years with the San Diego Padres.

The Boston Red Sox’s Jack Clark is curious about the absence of three-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens from training camp in Winter Haven, Fla.

“I’d be interested to know why he didn’t come. If you’re a catcher or a pitcher, you’re supposed to get here when everybody else gets here,” Clark said.

Clemens was to arrive for workouts Monday but has remained in Texas, saying he will report before the March 4 deadline established by the players union agreement.

“I’m sure he has things to do in Houston or Dallas or wherever he’s at. So did I and everybody else,” Clark said. “We don’t need any negative things . . . especially after the Carlos (Quintana) thing and Mrs. Yawkey.”

Quintana broke his left arm in a car accident in Venezuela last weekend, and Jean Yawkey, 83-year-old majority owner of the club, died Wednesday after suffering a stroke.
