Westchester Defeats Taft, 76-62
Westchester High, the defending City Section 4-A Division champion, coasted to a 76-62 quarterfinal playoff victory over Taft Friday night at Westchester.
Top-seeded Westchester (25-2) will play Manual Arts in a semifinal game on Tuesday.
Westchester, which won a league title this season for the first time in Ed Azzam’s 13 years as coach, was leading, 42-31, at halftime.
Taft missed its first nine shots of the third quarter before Adam James scored on a layup with 2:34 left, cutting Westchester’s lead to 50-33.
Casey Sheahan and Miguel Carrillo made consecutive three-point shots to pull Taft to within 62-47 with 5:42 left, but Westchester countered with a 10-1 run.
“They are impressive,” Sheahan said. “They are the best team in the City by far.”
Westchester guard James Gray scored 11 of his team-high 18 points in the second quarter.
Sheahan led Taft (18-5) with 17 points.
