Munsell takes over at Laguna Beach after stepping down as Trabuco Hills coach last season. He wasted little time pinpointing his new team’s strengths and weaknesses. “We’re going as far as our pitching and defense take us,” he said. The Artists have two starting pitchers back--Abraham (3-6, 4.00 earned-run average) and Ravensberg (3-5, 4.00 ERA). Coaches around the league are particularly high on Abraham; they say he could challenge as one of the best pitchers in a league full of good ones. Newcomer Garner, a left-hander, has recovered from shoulder surgery during football season and should round out the staff. The offense will be anchored by Allen, a solid defensive catcher with a strong arm who hit .421 last season. But Munsell’s biggest concern is a young, inexperienced infield. But improvement from Borella, McDonald and Garner (a first baseman when he doesn’t pitch) could solve that problem. Munsell said a top-three finish and a trip to the playoffs are reasonable expectations for his new team, which finished fifth in the league last season. “I always expect to make the playoffs, and this year is no different,” he said. “It depends on how fast the kids pick up what I want to do.”
