On Track in California
This is to all the Californians who helped make our visit to your state one of the most memorable.
We flew out from the Midwest to take the (rail) trips operated by the San Bernardino Railway Historical Society from Los Angeles to Barstow, Barstow to Bakersfield and return Dec. 27-30.
SBRHS and the Santa Fe seem to have gone out of their way to make the trips enjoyable and memorable. All the staff were gracious, helpful and patient, assuring passengers of a superb experience.
Newly restored by SBRHS, former Santa Fe steam locomotive No. 3751, appearing factory-new and magnificent, was assisted over the Cajon and Tehachapi passes by two attractive diesel engines in their former Super Chief colors. A fine mix of equipment, which included a well-staffed dining car, provided comfortable seating, either in former lounge cars, sleepers or “dome” cars. One even had a staffed barbershop. All of these cars, nicely maintained, gave the true feel of quality rail travel before Amtrak.
